Housing and design trends go through cycles, but pandemic-induced social distancing is changing the way people live their typical day-to-day lives. Realtor.com’s Ana Durrani outlines four real estate trends that people have latched on to during the COVID-19 pandemic and reasons why they will have staying power for years to come.

These trends include:
The urban exodus – With more companies allowing their workforce to work from home, many people are no longer tied to a specific city for employment. That, combined with the need for families to more easily experience outdoor space, has caused “the great escape” – a significant uptick in moves from cities to suburban and rural homes.

The zoom room – A dedicated room or corner of a home that features an aesthetically pleasing background for your videoconference calls. This space may include more than one within the home, as it is in demand for remote workers and students in the home alike.

Clean but cozy – Especially with COVID-19 around, no one wants to be in a space that feels cluttered, cramped, dark or that otherwise feels anything remotely “dirty.” Rather, clean, simplistic decor and decluttering are in strong demand, and renovations that can promote these elements are in strong demand.

The backyard premium – It’s little surprise that homebound owners—or would-be owners—are focusing more on backyard spaces. Some buyers are even willing to settle on a smaller house or a house in a less desirable area in order to have a large backyard where they can spend more time in the open air.
