New Rule for Table Saws

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission seeks to enforce safety requirements on table saws. Good idea or not?

1 MIN READ

I received a press release late last week from the Power Tool Institute alerting me that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) seeks to impose a new rule that would require “active injury mitigation” technology on all table saws (think SawStop and Reaxx technology on every table saw produced). PTI is concerned because they feel the requirement could potentially make the cost of table saws so extreme that it would be prohibitive to many consumers – and is worried that small manufacturers could go out of business. You can see PTIs member list here, which includes Festool, whose parent company recently acquired SawStop.

If you want your voice heard in opposition of this matter, you can comment on the “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” via PTI’s website at www.powertoolinstitute.net; there’s a link to a form you can fill out. The deadline is July 26th, 2017.
