Temperature and humidity meters are useful tools for building investigations, specifically to measure HVAC equipment performance. Here are some of the tools of the trade that building scientist Kohta Ueno of Building Science Corporation uses for forensic examinations and to diagnose problems in buildings. In previous blog posts in this series, Ueno tackled the topics of air, heat, and moisture.

In this post, he takes a look at various temperature and humidity meters, how he uses them for investigations and—more specifically—to take HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) measurements. As Ueno explains, there is a wide range in terms of cost, accuracy, and usability/features, and while this isn’t an exhaustive list, it’s a good introduction to those that he has worked with for different reasons.
