Which Knot Is Stronger?

Researchers learned that most people are surprisingly bad at guessing the strength of knots

1 MIN READ

Scientific American published a fun article about a study in which brain researchers at Johns Hopkins University presented volunteers with photographs of four different knots and asked: “Which knot would be hardest to undo if you pulled on the two long ends of its ropes? Rank them in order from weakest to strongest.”

The four knots shown in the article are reportedly among the simplest knots that can be tied with two lengths of string.

According to the article, the participants in the study consistently misjudged the strength of the knots by wide margins. Would building professionals trend higher? We think you might.

Take the challenge.
